A Coin and Its Purse

August 7, 2025

It's not a question whether God, my Father, loves me. Nothing can change that. The real question I am looking for is, Does he trust me?, Can he trust me?

10 “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. 11 And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?
— Luke 16:10-11 NLT

Just like how a child grows, they build trust with their parents through their behaviours that shape their character and obedience.  The consistency in their character builds trust and sets a path for them to follow. Obedience is the cornerstone of building this trust. Without obedience, you have nothing.

22 But Samuel replied,
“What is more pleasing to the Lord:
your burnt offerings and sacrifices
or your obedience to his voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice,
and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
— 1 Samuel 15:22 NLT

Imagine having a purse full of coins.  There are benefits to having coins in your purse.

Obedience is the work that lets you collect coins. The coins represent trust. The consistency of your character is the bag that holds the coins. This bag allows you to carry more coins based on its capacity. The capacity of the bag is based on your character. A bag in good standing will enable you to keep your coins without losing them.

Breaking trust is like slitting a hole in the coin bag.

Some holes are bigger than others.

Some holes can be repaired more easily than others.

Repairing a bag will leave a mark, like scars, as a reminder of the lesson learned.

The only way a repair will have no marks is if a master repairer can restore the bag to its original condition

Jesus is the master repairer. He can make all things new.

Jesus repairs things through your repentance. In true repentance, you turn away from that sin and choose to walk in his ways. He washes you clean in his blood, putting his robe of righteousness on you.

10 I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God!
For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation
and draped me in a robe of righteousness.
I am like a bridegroom dressed for his wedding
or a bride with her jewels.
— Isaiah 61:10 NLT

As you continue to walk in obedience to his word and ways, he will transform you, making you better than you were before in his timing.  It is your heart posture that matters. He will catch you when you fall short; his grace is sufficient. The righteous get back up again through repentance, while the wicked will stay down due to their love for sin. The righteous are stronger each time they rise because nothing is wasted in our lives. They can use the fall to grow in wisdom. Have more of their flesh crucified on the cross. The deeper the surrender to God and his ways, the deeper the victory is in your life.

Obedience is key to building trust, which is like the coins in your bag.  Reading the "Parable of the Three Servants" from Matthew 25:14-30  will be a good story to reflect on while considering how to invest your coins.

Prayer

Father God, I lift up these readers and myself to you. I pray that you increase their wisdom and understanding of what it means to walk in faithful obedience to you, Lord. I pray that they don't see it as a heavy burden because your burden is light. Let them experience the joy and peace of walking in your path of life. I pray that they don't get caught with you saying, "Why do you call me LORD if you don't do what I say?" I pray that they no longer desire the ways or the fruit of their sin. I pray that you strengthen them to walk in consistency of obeying so they can reap a good harvest when it's time. I pray that they don't grow weary of doing good. Thank you, Father, for your grace and mercy in our lives. We need our saviour every day and your mercies that are new every morning.  Father, I ask that you remove the scales from our eyes so we can see clearly what is truth and what is a lie. I pray for your wisdom in knowing how to deal with the truth and your strength to face it. Thank you, Father, for all that you have done, are doing and will do in our lives. Thank you for your faithfulness and for your love that never ends. Thank you for being the stronger one and for carrying us when we can no longer walk.  In Jesus' mighty name, amen, and thank you.
